Harry Potter HBO Series Casts James, Lily and Charlie
HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series has added three actors to its growing cast. Harry Gilby will play Charlie Weasley, while Jasper Talbot and Hannah Chinn will portray James Potter and Lily Potter, respectively. Variety reported the casting announcement on October 27, 2026, ahead of the show’s planned Christmas Day premiere.
The new additions will appear in the first season, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Their roles will bring important characters from J.K. Rowling’s books into the new television adaptation, including Charlie Weasley, who did not appear on screen in the original film franchise.
Harry Gilby to Play Charlie Weasley
According to Variety, Harry Gilby has been cast as Charlie Weasley, the eldest son of Arthur and Molly Weasley and an older brother of Ron Weasley. In Rowling’s books, Charlie works with dragons in Romania and remains an important part of the Weasley family, even though he has a limited presence in the main storyline.
His casting marks a notable change from the original film adaptations, which did not feature Charlie as an on-screen character. The television format may give the production more room to include characters and details that received little attention in the films.
Gilby has appeared in productions including Tolkien, The Last Kingdom and Boarders, according to published entertainment reports. His role in the HBO series will introduce him to audiences following the latest version of the Wizarding World.
Jasper Talbot and Hannah Chinn Join as Harry’s Parents
Jasper Talbot will portray James Potter, while Hannah Chinn has been cast as Lily Potter, Harry’s parents. Their characters are central to Harry’s history and help explain the events that shape his life before he begins studying at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
James and Lily have appeared in the earlier films through flashbacks, photographs and magical scenes. Their inclusion in the new series will allow the adaptation to revisit the family history that forms a major part of Harry’s story.
The casting also expands the series’ portrayal of the Potter family beyond its central young characters. However, further details about how much screen time James and Lily will receive have not been confirmed in the reports reviewed.
A Growing Cast for HBO’s Adaptation
The three actors join a cast led by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
Other announced cast members include John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Francesca Gardiner serves as writer and executive producer, while Mark Mylod will executive produce and direct multiple episodes.
The series is being developed as a long-form adaptation of Rowling’s books, with each season expected to focus on one novel.
When Will the Harry Potter Series Premiere?
The first season, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is scheduled to premiere on HBO on December 25, 2026, according to Variety. Meanwhile, the second season, based on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, is already filming at Leavesden Studios outside London.
The new casting announcements add to anticipation surrounding the adaptation as it approaches release. Viewers will be watching to see how the series balances familiar moments from the books with characters and story details that received less attention in the films.
