Man City Charges: UEFA Monitoring Premier League Case Before Deciding on Action
UEFA is monitoring the Premier League’s disciplinary case against Manchester City and will wait for it to end before deciding whether to take its own action, according to Sky Sports. The report, published on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, says City deny wrongdoing and are appealing.
What UEFA is doing
Sky Sports says UEFA will hold off until the Premier League process is complete. It adds that City and UEFA were contacted for comment, and no response was reported in the sources reviewed.
Sky notes that Premier League investigators saw documents UEFA lacked, and that UEFA has a five-year limit on financial rule breaches while the league has none.
Sky recalls that UEFA banned City from Europe for two years and fined them €30m in 2020. The Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned the ban and cut the fine to €10m for failing to co-operate, saying most alleged breaches were unproven or time-barred.
What the commission found
According to Sky Sports, an independent commission found that City used “sham” contracts with commercial partners as part of a disguised funding scheme between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons. Sky puts the artificial boost to revenue at £830m, while AFP and Gulf News report more than £900m.
Sky says the commission also found City filed accounts that hid its true finances and breached both Premier League and UEFA spending limits, including five charges linked to UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules. Three of four co-operation charges were upheld, and one was not proven.
CTV News reports that City were found to have committed almost all of the 115-plus alleged violations, while Gulf News says all but one of 115 charges. Sky says the verdict was published on September 29.
City’s response and the appeal
AFP reports that City lodged their appeal at 7pm on Thursday, October 1, a day before the deadline. The club says the commission’s opinion contains “clear material errors, of law, principle and fact.” City say they are innocent and have strong evidence.
Sky Sports News understands City will argue that the extra sponsorship funding came from the Abu Dhabi government rather than the club’s owners. Sky says the commission rejected that explanation earlier, but City are expected to keep contesting it.
Quick timeline:
- February 2023: Premier League brings its charges, per Sky.
- September to December 2024: Commission hearing takes place.
- September 29, 2026: Guilty verdict is published.
- October 1, 2026: City lodge their appeal.
- October 6, 2026: Sky reports UEFA is monitoring the case.
What happens next
Under Premier League rules, the appeal must be completed within 12 weeks and last no more than five days, according to CTV News and Sky. Sky says that points to a hearing before Christmas and a ruling in January, though City could argue the new rules should not apply.
CTV News says there is no word on whether sanctions can be imposed before the appeal is decided. The Premier League says the hearing will stay private until its outcome can be published.
