Middle Belt Insecurity: 501 European Lawmakers Urge FG to End Impunity and Deliver Justice
A group of 501 European lawmakers has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to take decisive action to end what they described as a culture of impunity fueling insecurity in the country’s Middle Belt region.
The lawmakers made the appeal in a joint communication expressing concern over the persistent violence affecting several communities in the Middle Belt. They urged Nigerian authorities to strengthen efforts to protect civilians, ensure justice for victims and hold those responsible for attacks accountable regardless of their status or affiliation.
According to the legislators, recurring incidents of violence have continued to claim lives, destroy property and force thousands of residents to flee their homes. They noted that while security operations have been intensified in some affected areas, more comprehensive measures are needed to address the root causes of the conflict and prevent further attacks.
The European lawmakers stressed that accountability remains a critical component of restoring peace and public confidence. They argued that perpetrators of violent crimes must be investigated, prosecuted and punished in accordance with the law to discourage future acts of violence.
They also encouraged the Nigerian government to strengthen the capacity of security agencies by improving intelligence gathering, enhancing coordination among law enforcement institutions and ensuring the timely deployment of personnel to vulnerable communities.
Beyond security measures, the lawmakers emphasized the need for dialogue, reconciliation and community-based peacebuilding initiatives. They said lasting peace in the Middle Belt would require addressing underlying issues such as competition over land and resources, displacement of communities and longstanding social tensions.
The group further called for greater humanitarian support for internally displaced persons affected by the violence. They urged authorities to provide adequate shelter, healthcare, education and livelihood assistance to families forced to leave their homes because of insecurity.
The appeal comes amid continued international attention on Nigeria’s security challenges, particularly in regions affected by communal clashes, banditry, terrorism and other forms of violent crime. Human rights organizations have also repeatedly called for stronger protection of civilians and more effective responses to attacks in vulnerable communities.
The lawmakers maintained that Nigeria, as Africa’s largest democracy, has both the responsibility and the capacity to strengthen the rule of law while protecting the fundamental rights of all citizens. They expressed hope that sustained reforms would improve public confidence in the justice system and contribute to long-term national stability.
Security analysts believe that ending impunity requires a combination of effective policing, credible investigations and an independent judicial process capable of ensuring justice without delay. They also argue that community engagement and early warning systems can help security agencies prevent attacks before they occur.
Meanwhile, stakeholders across Nigeria have continued to advocate stronger collaboration between the Federal Government, state governments, traditional rulers and local communities in addressing insecurity. Many believe that coordinated action and sustained investment in peacebuilding will be essential to restoring stability in the Middle Belt.
The Federal Government has consistently stated that it remains committed to tackling insecurity through military operations, intelligence-driven policing and judicial reforms aimed at strengthening accountability. Authorities have also pledged to continue supporting security agencies in their efforts to protect lives and property across the country.
As concerns over insecurity persist, the intervention by the 501 European lawmakers is expected to add to international calls for stronger action against violence and impunity. Observers say the development underscores the importance of sustained efforts to promote justice, protect vulnerable communities and ensure lasting peace in Nigeria’s Middle Belt.
