Ndume Urges Tinubu to Sustain Security Offensive Against Terrorists Across Nigeria
Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to sustain the ongoing military offensive against terrorist groups operating across parts of Nigeria, saying continuous pressure on criminal elements is essential to restoring peace and improving national security.
Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, made the appeal while reacting to the Federal Government’s efforts to tackle terrorism, insurgency, banditry and other security threats affecting different parts of the country. He commended the security agencies for their recent operations but stressed that the momentum must be maintained to prevent terrorist groups from regrouping.
According to the lawmaker, the recent gains recorded by the military should not lead to complacency. He said terrorist organizations often attempt to reorganize whenever security operations are relaxed, making it necessary for the government to sustain coordinated offensives against their hideouts.
Ndume noted that communities in the North-East and other affected regions have suffered years of attacks by insurgents, resulting in the loss of lives, displacement of thousands of residents and destruction of public infrastructure. He said the government must remain committed to eliminating terrorist networks to allow displaced persons to return safely to their communities.
The senator acknowledged the sacrifices being made by members of the armed forces and other security personnel in the fight against terrorism. He praised the courage of soldiers operating in difficult conditions and urged the Federal Government to continue providing them with modern equipment, improved welfare and adequate logistical support.
He emphasized that strengthening the morale of security personnel is critical to achieving lasting success in the campaign against insurgency. According to him, well-equipped and properly motivated troops are better positioned to carry out effective operations against criminal groups threatening national security.
Ndume also appealed to Nigerians to support the efforts of security agencies by providing credible and timely intelligence. He explained that cooperation between local communities and law enforcement agencies remains one of the most effective ways to identify terrorist movements and prevent attacks before they occur.
The senator further urged the government to complement military operations with initiatives that address the root causes of insecurity, including poverty, unemployment and limited educational opportunities. He argued that while security operations are necessary to defeat armed groups, long-term peace will also depend on creating economic opportunities and improving living conditions in vulnerable communities.
President Tinubu has repeatedly assured Nigerians that security remains one of the top priorities of his administration. In recent months, the Federal Government has intensified military operations against terrorist groups, armed bandits and kidnappers while directing security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering and inter-agency collaboration.
Security analysts have observed that sustained military pressure is essential in preventing insurgent groups from rebuilding their operational capacity. They also believe that continuous surveillance, intelligence sharing and improved border security are necessary to reduce the movement of weapons and fighters across the country’s borders.
Despite recent successes reported by security agencies, attacks by terrorist and criminal groups continue to pose serious challenges in some parts of the country. This has prompted renewed calls from political leaders, community stakeholders and civil society organizations for more decisive action to safeguard lives and property.
Ndume expressed optimism that Nigeria can overcome its security challenges if government institutions remain focused and security agencies receive the resources needed to carry out their constitutional responsibilities effectively. He stressed that consistency in military operations would send a strong message to criminal groups that there is no safe haven for terrorism within the country.
As the Federal Government continues to review its security strategies, the senator’s appeal highlights the growing expectation among Nigerians that ongoing offensives against terrorists should be sustained until lasting peace and stability are restored across all affected regions.
