NFF Sacks Super Falcons Head Coach Justin Madugu and Entire Technical Crew After World Cup Qualification Failure
The Nigeria Football Federation has directed the entire technical crew of the Super Falcons, including head coach Justin Madugu, to step down with immediate effect following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The decision was announced by the NFF Executive Committee in a brief statement posted on the federation’s official social media account on Monday, coming just days after Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the tournament in Brazil were ended following a defeat to South Africa in the continental play-off.
The federation’s statement was notably brief, stating simply that the Executive Committee had asked members of the Super Falcons’ technical crew to step down with immediate effect, without providing extensive reasoning for the decision. The directive followed a disappointing overall campaign for Nigeria’s nine-time African champions, beginning with a shock 3-2 defeat to Women’s Africa Cup of Nations debutants Malawi during the group stage of the tournament held in Morocco. That surprising early setback set the tone for what would ultimately become one of the most difficult periods in the Super Falcons’ storied history on the continental and international stage.
Nigeria’s troubles deepened further when the team suffered a historic quarter-final exit from the WAFCON tournament, losing 1-0 to fierce continental rivals Cameroon, marking the first time in the Super Falcons’ history that they had been eliminated at that stage of the competition. The defeat proved particularly costly, as it eliminated Nigeria from automatic qualification contention for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, a tournament the Super Falcons had previously qualified for in every single edition since the competition’s inception back in 1991, a remarkable record that now comes to an unwelcome end.
With automatic qualification lost, Nigeria was given one final opportunity to secure their place at the World Cup through a continental play-off match against South Africa. However, the Super Falcons were unable to overcome their opponents, suffering a 2-1 defeat that officially ended their hopes of reaching the 2027 tournament in Brazil. Speaking after the play-off defeat, head coach Justin Madugu acknowledged that Nigeria had created sufficient scoring opportunities throughout the match but ultimately failed to convert them, while also pointing to defensive errors that allowed South Africa to capitalise and secure the goals needed to advance at Nigeria’s expense.
Madugu, aged 62, had been part of the Super Falcons’ coaching setup since November 2021, when the NFF appointed him alongside Edwin Okon as part of a broader restructuring effort for the national women’s team’s technical department. He later assumed the role of head coach as the federation continued preparing the team for major international competitions, a tenure that has now come to an abrupt end following the team’s underwhelming performances across both the WAFCON tournament and subsequent World Cup qualification play-off.
In addition to sacking the technical crew, the NFF has also inaugurated a six-member Fact-Finding Committee tasked with investigating the recent poor performances of Nigeria’s national teams, placing particular focus on the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 World Cup. NFF President Ibrahim Gusau charged the committee, chaired by former NFF General Secretary Fanny Amun and including a former Super Falcons captain among its members, with identifying both the direct and underlying causes behind the team’s recent setbacks, while proposing practical solutions to address them. The committee has been given two weeks to submit its findings and recommendations. The development comes shortly after Nigeria’s senior men’s team, the Super Eagles, similarly failed to secure automatic qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, intensifying broader scrutiny of the country’s football development structures across multiple national teams.
