oni of Ife Urges Peaceful Conduct Ahead of Osun Governorship Poll
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has appealed to political parties, candidates, supporters and residents of Osun State to embrace peace and ensure a violence-free atmosphere ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.
The revered monarch made the appeal during a public engagement, stressing that peaceful elections are essential for sustaining democracy, promoting development and preserving the unity of the state. He urged all stakeholders to place the interests of Osun above personal or political ambitions.
According to the Ooni, elections should be viewed as an opportunity for citizens to freely choose their leaders rather than as a contest that encourages hostility or violence. He said political differences should never result in the destruction of lives or property, adding that the outcome of any election should be accepted through lawful and democratic means.
The traditional ruler called on political parties to conduct issue-based campaigns and avoid inflammatory statements capable of creating tension before, during and after the election. He advised candidates to encourage their supporters to remain law-abiding and respect the rights of others throughout the electoral process.
Oba Ogunwusi also appealed to the youth to resist attempts by politicians or other individuals to use them as agents of violence. He urged young people to play constructive roles in strengthening democracy by participating peacefully and rejecting acts capable of disrupting public order.
The monarch emphasised that Osun State has a long history of peaceful coexistence and should continue to serve as an example of democratic maturity. He expressed confidence that residents would once again demonstrate their commitment to peace by conducting themselves responsibly throughout the election period.
The Ooni further encouraged security agencies to remain professional, impartial and vigilant while carrying out their constitutional responsibilities. He noted that maintaining law and order without bias would help build public confidence in the electoral process and ensure that eligible voters exercise their rights without fear.
He also appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to continue working towards conducting a transparent, free and credible election. According to the monarch, public trust in the electoral process remains vital to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and ensuring that the wishes of the people are respected.
Political observers have welcomed the Ooni’s intervention, describing it as timely given the heightened political activities across Osun State. They noted that respected traditional rulers often play an important role in promoting dialogue, encouraging tolerance and reducing tensions during election periods.
