Police Arrest Two Men Over Alleged Rape and Murder of Nursing Student in Imo
The Nigeria Police Force in Imo State has confirmed the arrest of two men in connection with the alleged rape and killing of a female nursing student in Obowo Local Government Area of the state. Police said the arrests followed intelligence-led investigations carried out with support from community stakeholders.
The victim, identified in reports as Wendy Achumba, was a 21-year-old nursing student who was reportedly found dead at her off-campus residence in Umulogho community, Obowo. Authorities said the incident triggered concern among residents, students, and local leaders who demanded swift action and justice.
According to police spokesperson Henry Okoye, the suspects, identified as Onyema Okonkwo and Emmanuel Onyekachi, were arrested after sustained investigations linked them to the crime. Police said preliminary findings indicated one suspect allegedly confessed and implicated another during questioning, while investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the case.
Authorities stated that the suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further inquiries and possible prosecution. The police also assured residents that the case would be handled professionally and that anyone found culpable would face legal consequences under the law.
The killing has generated outrage within the community and among students, with many calling for stronger security around hostels and educational institutions. Community leaders and youth groups reportedly assisted law enforcement efforts, while residents expressed grief over the loss of the young student.
Security analysts say violent crimes involving students often renew concerns about safety around campuses, especially in off-campus residences where surveillance and emergency response systems may be limited. Advocacy groups have also stressed the importance of ensuring justice for victims while strengthening preventive measures.
Police urged members of the public to avoid spreading unverified claims as investigations continue. Authorities added that further details would emerge after forensic reviews and witness statements are completed, while the community continues to mourn the death of the nursing student and await the outcome of legal proceedings.
