Europe’s major football leagues delivered an eventful opening weekend of action, with several traditional heavyweights registering statement results as the 2026/27 campaign gathered pace across England, Spain, Italy and France.
Premier League
The new Premier League season kicked off in style, with Chelsea coming from behind to beat Fulham 3-2 in an entertaining west London derby. Manchester City eased past Bournemouth 2-1, while Brighton & Hove Albion put on the weekend’s most emphatic display, thrashing Aston Villa 4-0 at the Amex. Newcastle United and Liverpool shared the points in a 2-2 draw at St James’ Park. Ligue 1
