The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed that the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) recorded ₦1.95 billion in revenue from passenger services during the first quarter of 2025, marking a 37.36 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024.

According to the data, 929,553 passengers used rail travel in Q1 2025, up from 675,293 in Q1 2024—a rise of 37.65 percent. The report also shows that revenue from transporting goods and cargo during the period stood at ₦657.03 million, reflecting an 8.19 percent increase year-on-year. Totals for other receipts hit ₦115.68 million, rising sharply by 355.39 percent against Q1 2024.

Analysts attribute these increases largely to improved infrastructure and expanded operations, particularly on routes such as Lagos-Ibadan and other upgraded lines. The growth in passenger numbers and rail usage underscores a rising public reliance on rail transport as alternative modes of travel become more costly or less reliable.

While this performance signals positive momentum for Nigeria’s rail sector, challenges remain in scaling service coverage, boosting capacity, reducing operational bottlenecks, and ensuring that fare revenues translate into sustainable investments for maintenance and expansion.
