Nigeria and Werder Bremen defender Felix Agu has successfully undergone surgery to repair a severe ankle injury. He suffered a syndesmosis ligament injury—commonly known as a high ankle sprain—during a recent match against St. Pauli.

Club medical reports confirmed that the surgery was successful and that Agu is now set to begin a rehabilitation program under the care of Werder Bremen’s medical team. Because of the injury’s severity, Agu is expected to be sidelined for several months, which raises concern over his participation in upcoming national team commitments.

Agu had originally been named in Nigeria’s squad for matchdays 9 and 10 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin Republic. However, he was withdrawn from the team after the extent of his injury became clear. There is also growing speculation that he may miss the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, depending on how his recovery progresses.

The Super Eagles coaching staff will now look to alternative defenders to fill the void left by Agu’s absence. Meanwhile, fans and teammates are sending messages of support as he recovers. Agu’s return to full fitness will be closely monitored, and any updates on his condition will be important for both his club and national team futures.
