Comrade Abiodun Aremu killed in hit-and-run
Veteran labour activist Comrade Abiodun “Aremson” Aremu has died following a suspected hit-and-run accident in Ota, Ogun State. He was aged 65.
The incident occurred on Sunday, October 12, 2025, around 6 p.m., as Aremu was crossing the road toward his residence. Witnesses say a vehicle struck him and fled the scene. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where medical personnel attempted resuscitation, but he was eventually confirmed dead.
Following his death, the family and labour movement agreed to postpone his burial to Thursday, October 23, 2025. The delay was intended to allow activists, comrades, and supporters adequate time to mobilise and pay their respects. The interment site will be at No. 30 Kabiru Fatoye Street, opposite Alaka Field, Ijako Sugar Bus Stop, Ifo Road along the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway.
Aremu was Secretary of the Joint Action Front (JAF), a coalition of pro-labour civil society groups. He was a respected Marxist organizer, ideologue, and mentor to many in Nigeria’s left and labour circles. He founded the Amílcar Cabral Ideological School Movement (ACIS-M) as a platform to educate, train, and mobilise youth and cadres in principles of socialism and revolutionary praxis. He also held roles in solidarity movements, including those focused on Cuba and Western Sahara.
In response to his death, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) expressed profound grief and called for a full investigation into the circumstances of the accident. The NLC described Aremu’s passing as a tragic loss for workers, civil society, and the broader public. The labour body warned that the nature of the hit-and-run bears the marks of a suspicious pattern and demanded transparency in the probe.
Many activists, academics, and progressive voices have begun pouring in tributes, celebrating his unyielding dedication to social justice, workers’ rights, and anti-imperialist struggle. His loss is being deeply felt in Nigeria’s progressive movement, where he was seen both as an intellectual force and a grassroots builder.
