Man electrocuted reconnecting power cable in Ogun
A man identified only as Edward has died after being electrocuted while trying to reconnect an electricity cable in the Kajola community of Ifo Local Government Area, Ogun State. The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. on October 3, when power was reportedly restored while he was working on a connection to a pole. Residents found his lifeless body later in the day.
Edward was not an official staff of any power distribution company but was known locally for helping with small electrical repair jobs. He had been hired by a resident to restore electricity to an apartment. On the day of the tragedy, he collected money to rent a ladder and proceeded to work alone.
Witnesses said people became worried when he did not return. They later located his body near the pole where he had been working. Emergency efforts to revive him failed, and his remains were taken to the morgue.
It was reported that the tenant who hired him, along with other occupants of the residence, were arrested following the incident. They were later granted bail. The matter has raised serious concerns about safety and regulation of electrical work by untrained individuals.
This event adds to a worrying pattern of electrocution incidents tied to unauthorized or informal electrical repairs. Experts warn that the risks escalate when power is restored without proper safety safeguards in place. It underscores the urgent need for strict enforcement of electrical safety laws and reliance on certified professionals.
