Rivers State police arrest for stabbing over rejected marriage proposal
The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a 46-year-old man named Abi Baragon after he allegedly stabbed a woman he was romantically involved with multiple times. The assault reportedly followed her refusal of his marriage proposal.
According to a statement from the command’s spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the attack came to light when a video went viral in June 2025 showing the woman bleeding and crying for help. The police say that upon receiving that video, operatives from the Human Rights Department, State Headquarters, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, quickly acted. Using intelligence-led tactics and technical support, they traced and arrested Baragon on October 13, 2025, in connection with the crime.
Investigators allege the motive was the victim’s rejection of his marriage overtures after she learned he was already married with four children—a claim he has denied. During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to stabbing the victim and said he used broken bottles as weapons. The victim, named as Orineme Ayanate, is reportedly hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, while Baragon remains in police custody as the investigation continues.
The state Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, praised the swift action of the operatives and thanked the public for supplying credible information that helped locate the suspect. The police have launched a full investigation to determine all the circumstances surrounding the violent incident.
