FG N50,000 Relief: Beneficiary Selection Criteria
The Federal Government has explained how beneficiaries are selected for its ₦50,000 cash relief programme, saying recipients are drawn from verified national identity records and the National Social Register. https://punchng.com/how-fg-selects-beneficiaries-for-n50000-relief/?utm
The clarification concerns the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI). According to PUNCH Online and the programme’s official website, selection is based on existing records, not public applications.
NIN and National Social Register are central
The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction says beneficiaries are identified using verified national identity records and the National Social Register, then screened to reach poor and vulnerable households.
PUNCH reports that the National Identification Number (NIN), issued by the National Identity Management Commission, helps verify recipients’ identities. The National Social Register is a database of vulnerable households coordinated by the National Social Safety-Nets Coordinating Office.
PUNCH reports that NASSCO says the register contains more than 70 million individuals. States identify poor communities, while trained teams work with residents and community leaders to identify vulnerable households.
Households are digitally registered and assessed using poverty indicators. PUNCH reports that those ranked within the bottom six deciles may qualify for inclusion in the National Beneficiary Register, which supports cash-transfer programmes.
Specific screening thresholds remain unclear
Although the government has outlined the databases used, it has not published detailed screening thresholds or a complete list of conditions determining who receives the ₦50,000 payment.
Pulse Nigeria reported on November 5 that the ministry had not disclosed the precise criteria or poverty-indicator cut-off. Therefore, registration alone does not automatically confirm that a person will receive the relief.
The ministry says selection is based on need across all six geopolitical zones, regardless of religion, ethnicity or political affiliation. Payments are being released in phases, meaning beneficiaries may not receive notifications at the same time.
How to check if you have been selected
According to the official NERSI website, selected beneficiaries will receive an SMS from one of five approved providers: ALAT by Wema, MoMo PSB, NairaGram, OPay or Moniepoint.
Recipients can check eligibility through their provider’s USSD channel. The programme lists ALAT (*945*23#), MoMo PSB (*671*0#), NairaGram (*726*00#), OPay (*955*20#) and Moniepoint (*5573*27#).
The ministry says beneficiaries must consent before payment. Once accepted, ₦50,000 is credited to a mobile wallet linked to the recipient’s phone number and NIN. The grant is not a loan and does not have to be repaid.
What happens next?
The ministry announced NERSI’s commencement on October 30, 2026. Humanitarian Affairs Minister Bernard Doro said the intervention would provide immediate support to vulnerable Nigerians facing rising living costs.
The ministry says payments will continue in phases and the programme will be reviewed as living costs change. Pulse Nigeria reported that officials had not specified the total number of households to be paid or how long the rollout would last.
Officials warn that Nigerians do not need to apply, pay a fee or use an agent to secure selection. The official NERSI website advises people to avoid anyone promising access to the beneficiary list for money and to contact the programme helpline, 0700-022-2222, for assistance.
