Leeds Forward Noah Okafor Steps Away From Switzerland Amid Fallout With Murat Yakin
Leeds United forward Noah Okafor has announced he will not play for Switzerland while Murat Yakin remains head coach, citing a serious breakdown in trust and a series of unkept commitments from the national team’s leadership.
The 26-year-old made his decision public in a lengthy statement posted to his Instagram account on Thursday, September 10, insisting the choice had nothing to do with his lack of playing time at this summer’s World Cup, where Switzerland reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated by eventual finalists Argentina. Okafor featured for just 19 minutes as a substitute during Switzerland’s last-32 win over Algeria, bringing his total international appearances to 26 since making his senior debut back in 2019. “My decision has nothing to do with my playing time,” Okafor wrote. “Things happened that hurt me deeply. Trust was broken. Commitments were not kept.”
Okafor went on to describe the tournament as one of the most difficult periods of his career to date, explaining that he had travelled to the World Cup feeling motivated and in good form following a strong season at club level, after having previously cleared the air with Yakin. What followed, he said, left him considerably more disappointed. He specifically pointed to the reaction that followed his brief appearance against Algeria as a turning point. “And when I was allowed to play against Algeria, people reacted to minor mistakes far away from our goal in a way that hurt me deeply,” he said. Okafor added that he had spent the following weeks reflecting on the situation before ultimately deciding he no longer wished to represent the national team under the current coaching setup, while stressing that the decision had been an extremely difficult one for him personally, and that he would have liked nothing more than to continue playing for Switzerland under different circumstances.
The Swiss Football Association responded to the announcement by confirming it had been informed of Okafor’s decision and would respect his wishes. “Noah informed us today that, for the time being, he will no longer play for the national team. We respect his decision and wish him every success with his club,” a spokesperson for the association said, leaving the door open for a potential future return should circumstances change.
Okafor, who was born in Switzerland to a Nigerian father and Swiss mother, joined Leeds United from Italian club AC Milan in August 2025 for a reported £18 million, and has continued to feature prominently for his club side, having scored twice in a recent Premier League win over Manchester United. Yakin, who has been in charge of the Swiss national team since August 2021 and led the country to its first World Cup quarter-final appearance since 1954 this summer, is expected to name his first squad since the tournament ahead of Switzerland’s upcoming Nations League campaign, which begins with a home fixture against North Macedonia on September 26, followed by an away trip to face Scotland at Hampden Park on September 29, a match that will also mark incoming head coach Sebastien Pocognoli’s first game in charge of the Belgium national team on the same date.
With Okafor’s international future now on hold, Switzerland will continue their Nations League preparations without one of their more experienced forwards, as the fallout from his very public statement continues to draw attention across Swiss and Premier League football circles alike.
