Manchester United Complete Signing of Man City Academy Midfielder David Eze
Manchester United have completed the signing of 16-year-old midfielder David Eze from local rivals Manchester City, marking the club’s second raid on the Etihad academy in the space of a single week.
Eze, born in Dublin, progressed through Manchester City’s youth system and has represented England at both Under-16 and Under-17 level. Despite attracting concrete interest from several major European clubs over the summer transfer window, the versatile central midfielder ultimately opted to continue his development at Old Trafford. He has agreed a pre-professional contract with United and will move onto full professional terms once he turns 17.
Confirming the move, Manchester United said in an official statement: “Talented youngster David Eze has joined Manchester United. The central midfielder has joined the club after leaving Manchester City. The 16-year-old, who progressed through the academy system at City, has also been capped by England at youth level. Everyone wishes David the best of luck at United and welcomes him to the club.” Upon signing, Eze was given a tour of Old Trafford, mirroring the welcome previously extended to fellow new recruit Karim Cassim.
Eze’s arrival comes just two days after United confirmed the signing of Cassim, another highly rated Manchester City academy player, meaning the club has now landed two notable young prospects from its cross-town rivals within the space of a week. Because of post-Brexit regulations restricting academy recruitment largely to players based within the United Kingdom, United have grown increasingly proactive in recent years in bringing in promising young talent from neighbouring English clubs, including their closest local rivals.
Eze is not the only recent arrival from Manchester City’s academy either, with reports also expecting the signing of Issac Konde from Liverpool’s youth ranks to be confirmed in the coming weeks, underlining the scale of United’s current investment in strengthening its academy pipeline. The club’s youth setup has historically been regarded as one of the strongest in world football, having produced modern graduates such as Marcus Rashford, and United will be hoping Eze, alongside Cassim and the expected addition of Konde, can follow a similar path through the ranks at Carrington in the years ahead.
For now, the teenager’s focus turns to settling into his new surroundings and continuing his development within United’s academy structure, as he begins the process of working toward a first professional contract with the club upon turning 17.
